Finance Minister Announces Cabinet Approval to Abolish 150,000 Vacant Posts

ISLAMABAD: Government to Abolish 150,000 Vacant Posts to Reduce Federal Expenditures

The federal government has decided to eliminate approximately 150,000 vacant positions across various ministries as part of its efforts to cut federal expenditures, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced during a press conference in Islamabad.

The finance minister revealed that the federal cabinet approved a proposal to abolish nearly 60% of unfilled posts across ministries. He described the decision as a key component of a broader plan to streamline government operations and minimize unnecessary spending.

Highlighting the financial burden, Aurangzeb noted that the government’s current expenditures amount to approximately Rs 900 million. He explained that a committee formed by the Prime Minister had conducted a detailed review of 43 ministries and 400 departments to assess their performance and relevance over the past three to four decades.

“Based on the committee’s recommendations, the cabinet has approved the abolition of nearly 60% of vacant positions, amounting to approximately 150,000 posts across various ministries,” he said.

Aurangzeb emphasized that the review process aims to identify functions that can be devolved to provincial governments and pinpoint redundant departments that can be eliminated. He reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a more efficient and streamlined administrative structure.

The review process is being conducted in phases, the minister noted. The first phase focuses on six ministries, the second on four, and the third will evaluate an additional five ministries and departments.

Speaking about reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Aurangzeb stated that changes are being implemented gradually. He also underscored the government’s dedication to sustainable development and called on the private sector to play a pivotal role in achieving these goals.

Aurangzeb further highlighted the “Udan Pakistan” programme, which he described as a significant initiative to promote sustainable development and drive national progress.
